Although I mainly teach guitar and bass, I've been playing drums a lot longer. I love it. Please give us some details on your playing, your favorite dummers, and any tips you have. I'll get it started. I'm mostly a groove player. I love the feeling of making a song move/feel a certain way. It's magic when a band clicks together. I'm usually a hard hitter.. this can be good in the studio but bad at Schmitt Music where I frequently distrub the peace. :) Favorite drummers are: danny carey, mike portnoy, jeff porcaro, mark o'day, and john bonham. A tip I have for beginners.. Don't just play your rudiments on a pad. Use them in a beat. Make them groove. Have fun with them. And always play to a click or a CD. I took a year out of my life and just practiced to a Steely Dan CD. It took me very far. Also, don't underestimate the power of ghost notes. They fill in the gaps and give you a better feel. -unless you're lars ulrich :)
I finally know enough to know that I don't know anything.

I may have to get your help dabbling in drums at some point in the future. It looks really fun and so physical! Plus I feel I need to learn more about the rythym/timing aspects of music. And wouldnt it be fun to have a new "big boy toy" in the house! K-

I've been thinking the same thing as kman lately. Maybe someday I'll have you show me a few things on the drums. I would like to learn more about rhythm, but also like you said, there must be something fairly theraputic about pounding on the drums! It is kinda hard when the wife is against any possibility of picking up a kit. I'm surprised she puts up with the racket I make on the bass! |
